Our services include street outreach, assessment hubs, supported accommodation, and tenancy support, helping people move off the streets and into safe, secure housing. THE ROLE

You will provide a safe, welcoming, and responsive service for residents within a 14-bed, 24-hour hostel, ensuring their welfare, dignity, and protection at all times during day and evening shifts. The postholder must be able to work shift patterns such as 8am - 4pm or 2pm - 10pm.

You will work with vulnerable adults, remaining alert to risk, responding appropriately to concerns or incidents, and following SPEAR’s safeguarding and risk management procedures.

Working closely with colleagues across the service, you will maintain accurate records, clear communication, and effective handovers to ensure continuity of support between shifts.

You will hold a small caseload of residents, providing key-work support that is person-centred, trauma-informed, and focused on promoting independence, stability, and wellbeing. Your role will help create a calm, well-managed, and supportive hostel environment, where residents feel safe, respected, and encouraged to engage with support and services.

ABOUT YOU

You have experience supporting people affected by homelessness or rough sleeping, including those with complex needs such as mental ill-health, substance use or trauma. You bring strong safeguarding and risk assessment knowledge, and you're confident identifying, responding to, and escalating concern promptly.

You are approachable and resilient and able to stay calm in a busy and sometimes challenging environment. You understand the issues, barriers and behaviours that people experiencing homelessness may display, responding with compassion and psychologically informed strategies.

You're skilled at building positive relationships and motivating individuals who may initially be wary of services, and you know how to use de-escalation and support techniques with clients displaying challenging behaviour. You communicate clearly and are committed to confidentiality and professional boundaries. You work well both independently and as part of a team.

THE ROLE

As a Hostel Night Worker, you'll provide a safe, welcoming and responsive overnight service for hostel residents, safeguarding their welfare at all times. Staying alert to risk, you'll respond quickly to incidents and follow SPEAR's safeguarding procedures — taking sole charge of the hostel while on duty.

Working closely with daytime colleagues, you'll keep accurate records and clear handovers, so support continues seamlessly. Your presence overnight helps residents feel secure, respected and supported, in a calm, well-managed environment.

You'll typically work 21:45– 08:45 (hours subject to change) on a rota basis and must remain awake throughout your shift.

Housing First Worker

The Role

In this crucial role, your focus will be on the service delivery of SPEAR’s Housing First model. You will work with staff and management teams to deliver this innovative model of housing society’s most vulnerable people, helping us drive forward a collective vision of inclusion and participation across the organisation. Housing First is a SPEAR service that provides independent tenancies with registered social landlords via the council nomination process and intensive personalised support to rough sleepers who have not progressed through any supported accommodation pathway.

About You

You’ll bring experience of supporting people affected by homelessness or other complex challenges, plus the empathy, resilience and practical skills to make a lasting impact. You’ll know how to build rapport, plan support, and work collaboratively with housing and health services. You will build trusting relationships and provide flexible and one-to-one support. You will work in partnership with the London Borough of Wandsworth and local agencies to help people stay housed, improve their wellbeing and help them feel part of the community. You'll respond to changing priorities and manage situations as they arise, making sure services reach those who need them most.
